Both cars start from the same premise take a large SUV, give it a sloping roofline, charge more for it. Beyond that, they go in noticeably different directions.
I want to say something before the specs: the coupe SUV format makes a real trade off and it's worth acknowledging it plainly. The X6 gives up about 65 litres of boot space compared to the X5. The GLE Coupe gives up about 170 litres compared to the standard GLE. Rear headroom for passengers above 180 centimetres gets tighter. If you fill your boot regularly or consistently carry tall adults, the standard body is probably the more honest choice. This guide assumes you've worked through that question already.
The G06, from 2019 onwards, is a different vehicle from its predecessors. The first two generations of the X6 had a complicated reputation in markets where they were widely sold. Dramatic to look at, interesting to drive, but the interior didn't always justify the premium over the X5. The G06 fixed the interior properly.
The engine for Kenya's market is the xDrive30d: the B57 3.0 litre inline six diesel producing 265 horsepower and 620 Nm. This engine averages 9 to 12 litres per 100 kilometres in mixed Kenyan use. It's the rational choice among the available options. The M50d and the M60i V8 are available on higher specification imports. Both are fast. Both drink significantly more.
BMW's Curved Display in the G06 is the interior element that gets the most attention. A single arching panel combining a 12.3 inch digital cluster and a 14.9 inch touchscreen. It's well executed and positions the interior clearly in the current luxury tier. The optional individual rear seats change the back row from a tight three person bench to a deliberate two person arrangement. If you carry one rear passenger most of the time, specify them.
The X6's real argument is how it drives. BMW's xDrive system runs rear biased in normal conditions. The steering is more direct than the GLE Coupe's. The suspension, especially with the adaptive dampers, is controlled on good roads in a way that the GLE Coupe doesn't match. Kenya's better tarmac rewards this. Kenya's speed bumps and potholed estate roads less so.
The C167 runs on the same platform as the standard GLE, which means it gets the standard GLE's air suspension. That matters more than it sounds. Kenya's roads are variable enough that the difference between steel spring and air suspension shows up in daily life, not just on smooth highways. The GLE Coupe is more comfortable on broken tarmac than the X6. It's not a small margin.
The GLE 400d is the engine to find in Kenya's market: the 3.0 litre inline six diesel at 330 horsepower and 700 Nm, averaging 9 to 11 litres per 100 kilometres. The AMG GLE 53 at 435 horsepower is available for performance buyers. The running costs reflect the upgrade.
MBUX in the current GLE Coupe is the best infotainment in this segment at this price. The voice control works better than BMW's in practice. The dual 12.3 inch screens are sharp. The ambient lighting covers 64 colours. These aren't trivial for buyers who spend hours per day in the car.
The Mercedes service advantage in Kenya is concrete. Authorised centres in Nairobi and Mombasa. Better parts supply chains than BMW for common maintenance items. More independent workshops with proper Mercedes diagnostic tools. For buyers outside Nairobi, this is a real operational consideration.

Buy the X6 if you drive with some enthusiasm on Nairobi's better roads and highways, and the driving experience is part of why you're buying the car. It's the more involving vehicle.
Buy the GLE Coupe if daily comfort matters more than occasional engagement, you use the car's technology frequently, or you operate in areas outside Nairobi where the Mercedes service network gives you more options.
Both are expensive to run. Neither is irrational if you can afford it and want what it offers. At Car Store, we stock both and we'd rather have an honest conversation about which suits you than sell you the wrong one.
