Most buyers in Kenya who are spending at the level where a Lexus LX600 makes sense are comparing it to the Range Rover, the Mercedes GLS 450, or the G Wagon. That's a reasonable comparison set. What they're less often doing is comparing it to what it actually is under the skin: a Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series with a substantially upgraded interior, better standard specification, and the Lexus ownership experience layered on top.
I think the LX600 is underappreciated in Kenya's market, and I want to explain why without overselling it. It's not the right vehicle for everyone at this price. But for a specific kind of buyer it's the most rational choice in the KES 20 million to KES 35 million segment.
The LX600 launched in 2021 as the sixth generation of Lexus's flagship SUV. It shares the TNGA-F platform with the Land Cruiser 300 Series and uses the same 3.5 litre twin turbo V6 petrol engine in naturally aspirated configuration, producing 415 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. The same torque figure as the Land Cruiser diesel, with substantially more power.
What Lexus adds to the Land Cruiser's foundation: a more thoroughly engineered interior, a standard specification that includes items that would be options on the Land Cruiser, and Lexus's dealer service experience. The interior quality difference between an LX600 and a 300 Series VX is real and immediately apparent. The LX600 uses better leather, more detailed stitching, higher grade wood and metal trim, and a more carefully assembled cabin environment. It's closer in feel to the Mercedes GLS 450 than it is to the Land Cruiser it shares a platform with.
Two configurations are available: a five seat and a seven seat. The seven seat version adds a proper third row that is more usable than most SUV third rows, though comfort for adults on journeys longer than 30 minutes remains limited. The five seat version has a significantly larger boot.

The Ultra Luxury four seat configuration is a separate product from the standard LX600. It removes the second row bench entirely and replaces it with two individual executive seats with full recline, ottoman footrests, and a rear entertainment system. For the right buyer it's exceptional. It's also priced to match.
At KES 22 million to KES 30 million, the LX600 competes with fourth generation full size Range Rovers in mid spec, the Mercedes GLS 450 in lower mileage used examples, and the BMW X7 in entry diesel configuration. Here's my honest assessment of how it compares.
Against the Range Rover: the LX600 wins on long-term reliability by a significant margin. The Land Cruiser platform's proven record in East Africa's conditions is a concrete advantage for buyers who travel extensively outside Nairobi. The Range Rover offers better ride quality through air suspension and a more prestigious social standing in Kenya's luxury market. If the badge matters more than the reliability record, the Range Rover makes sense. If the reverse is true, the LX600 makes more sense.
Against the GLS 450: the Mercedes has better infotainment, a more sophisticated interior technology package, and the MBUX system that most buyers find more intuitive than Lexus's interface. The LX600 has a more durable powertrain foundation and a service experience at Lexus Kenya that some buyers find more attentive than the volume pressure of the main Mercedes service centre. I'd call this one genuinely close and it comes down to personal preference more than a clear winner.
Against the BMW X7: the LX600 is a more capable vehicle off tarmac, full stop. The X7 is a motorway and city SUV. The LX600 will drive to places the X7 shouldn't attempt. For buyers whose use extends beyond good roads, this matters.
Lexus Kenya operates through an authorised dealership in Nairobi. Service standards are high and the experience is deliberately different from a volume car brand's service centre. Appointment scheduling, courtesy vehicles, and the general standard of customer interaction are areas where Lexus has invested specifically because the brand's positioning requires it.
Parts for the LX600 in Kenya are available through the authorised channel. The V6 petrol engine is shared with the Land Cruiser 300 Series which helps with some powertrain components, though Lexus specific parts for the interior and body need to come through official channels. Costs are in line with European luxury brands rather than Toyota mainstream pricing.
• Full Lexus service history from the authorised Kenya dealership or a verified export service record for imported examples.
• Complete import documentation: customs entry, IDF, PVOC certificate. The LX600 is new enough in Kenya that any documentation gap should be treated seriously.
• VIN verification on the vehicle against all documentation. Standard for any vehicle at this price.
• Electronic systems check: the LX600's Lexus Safety System Plus and the multimedia interface should all be fully operational. Run a full diagnostic before purchase.
• Air suspension condition. Confirm all height settings work correctly and no warning lamps are present.
• NTSA clean record check before any payment. A flag on a KES 25 million vehicle is not a minor administrative issue.
The LX600 is the right vehicle for buyers who want Land Cruiser level reliability with a genuinely luxurious interior, who value the service experience associated with a proper luxury brand, and who don't need the social currency of a Mercedes or Range Rover badge specifically.
It's not the right vehicle for buyers who do most of their driving in Nairobi and whose purchase is primarily about the brand statement the car makes in a car park. The LX600 is less immediately recognisable than a G Wagon or a Range Rover. That's not a failure of the vehicle. It's just an accurate description of its positioning.
At Car Store, we source LX600 models from verified importers with complete documentation. If you're considering one and want to compare it against the Range Rover, GLS 450, or 300 Series in detail, that's a conversation worth having before you decide.
