There's a version of the C-Class conversation in Kenya that goes like this: it's the entry point into Mercedes, it's what you buy when you can't stretch to an E-Class, it's a starter luxury car. That framing is unfair to the current generation and I want to address it directly. The W206 C-Class that launched in 2021 borrows so much technology from the flagship S-Class that calling it entry level is genuinely misleading. The interior, in particular, is not a lesser version of the Mercedes experience. It's the full version in a more compact body.
The C-Class is also one of the most popular premium saloons in Kenya's market for a reason that has nothing to do with it being entry level. It's the right size for Nairobi's parking, the right size for most families who use one car for most purposes, and it offers a driving experience that the BMW 3 Series, its primary competitor, has to work hard to match.
The W206, which arrived in Kenya from 2022, is the most significant redesign the C-Class has had in years. Mercedes took the S-Class's MBUX Hyperscreen concept and applied a scaled version of it to the C-Class. The result is a cabin with an 11.9 inch portrait touchscreen running MBUX and a 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster. The rear passengers get a separate 11.9 inch tablet-style screen as standard on Avantgarde and AMG Line specifications. This is technology that wasn't available in any C-Class three years ago.
The powertrain story also changed. The W206 introduced a 48 volt mild hybrid system across all petrol variants. The 1.5 litre four cylinder with mild hybrid in the C200 produces 204 horsepower. The 2.0 litre turbo in the C300 produces 258 horsepower. Both benefit from the electric assist for reduced fuel consumption and smoother low-speed response. The C300 4Matic with all wheel drive is the variant most suited to Kenya's mixed road conditions.

The W205 generation remains widely available in Kenya at more accessible prices. It's a good vehicle. But the W206's interior technology gap over the W205 is large enough that buyers who care about in-car technology should prioritise the newer generation even at the higher price.
I want to spend time on this because it's the reason most buyers who sit in a W206 for the first time come away recalibrating their budget. The portrait touchscreen dominates the centre console in a way that looks excessive in photographs and feels completely natural in use. The MBUX system's natural language voice control on the W206 responds faster and more accurately than the W205 version. You say 'I'm cold' and it adjusts the temperature. You say 'I need fuel' and it navigates to the nearest petrol station. This sounds like a small thing. After three months of daily use it becomes one of those features you miss in every other car.
The rear seat experience in the W206 is also better than most buyers expect from a compact saloon. Mercedes stretched the wheelbase slightly in this generation, which added legroom that adults notice. The rear screen is a genuine passenger feature rather than an afterthought.
These two have been compared every year for 30 years and the honest answer in 2026 is closer than most brand loyalists admit.
The BMW 3 Series drives better. The steering is more direct, the chassis is more willing, and the overall driving engagement on a good road is higher than the C-Class. For buyers who use the car as a driver's vehicle, the 3 Series is the right answer.
The Mercedes W206 has the better interior. The MBUX system is more sophisticated than BMW's iDrive in daily use. The ambient lighting, the seat quality, and the overall sensation of being in a thoughtfully designed space are stronger in the C-Class. For buyers who spend more time as passengers or who use the car primarily for commuting and comfort, the C-Class is the better daily environment.
Service network in Kenya: both brands have authorised centres in Nairobi. Mercedes has a slightly more established parts supply chain in Kenya, which matters when something specific needs replacing.
• W206 MBUX system functionality. All screens, voice control, and connected services should be fully operational.
• Mild hybrid system on W206 petrol variants. No warning lamps for the 48 volt system and smooth low-speed electric assist.
• Full Mercedes service history from an authorised centre for both generations.
• 4Matic all wheel drive engagement on equipped variants. Confirm clean operation without drivetrain warnings.
• Complete NTSA record and import documentation before payment.
