Toyota Land Cruiser for Sale in Kenya, Which Generation, Which Spec, and What to Pay

Carstore LIMITED May 07, 2026

The Land Cruiser is Kenya's most written about vehicle and also, somehow, still the most misunderstood by buyers who approach it without proper preparation. People know the name. They know the reputation. What they're often less clear on is which Land Cruiser they're actually talking about, because Toyota has sold several quite different vehicles under that name over the past 25 years.

This guide is specifically for buyers who are ready to commit to a Land Cruiser purchase in 2026 and want to get the details right: which generation fits your budget, which specification suits your use, and what the current market actually charges for each.

The Land Cruiser Generations Active in Kenya's Market

Four generations of Land Cruiser are currently traded with any volume in Kenya. Each is a meaningfully different vehicle.

The 100 Series ran from 1998 to 2007. Most examples available in Kenya now have covered significant mileage and are priced between KES 1.5 million and KES 3.5 million for petrol V8 models in reasonable condition. These are durable vehicles but the parts ecosystem for the older petrol V8 is thinning. Buyers considering the 100 Series should focus on examples with documented service history and should budget for potential powertrain maintenance costs that the newer diesel generations don't carry.

The 200 Series ran from 2007 to 2021 and is the generation that most serious buyers mean when they say Land Cruiser V8. The twin turbo diesel in VX and ZX specifications is the heart of this generation's appeal in Kenya. More on this below.

The 300 Series launched in 2021 and replaced the 200 Series. It moved from a V8 diesel to a twin turbo V6 diesel producing the same torque but more power and better fuel economy. Still arriving in Kenya in meaningful numbers in 2026.

The 70 Series is the working vehicle variant, available as a station wagon and a pickup. It's not the premium SUV that most buyers have in mind and suits a different use case entirely: farms, game parks, serious commercial work. Worth mentioning because the 70 Series is sometimes confused with the 200 Series in casual conversation.

The 200 Series Diesel Why It Still Dominates the Market

If you ask most experienced Land Cruiser buyers in Kenya which generation they'd buy with their own money, the majority say a 2015 to 2019 200 Series VX with documented service history. The 1VD-FTV twin turbo diesel has been running on Kenyan roads long enough that its failure modes are well understood and its service requirements are familiar to authorised Toyota centres and good independent workshops alike.

The 650 Nm of torque from the diesel makes the 200 Series genuinely effortless in most conditions. Fully loaded with passengers and luggage, towing, navigating steep terrain, or cruising at 120 kilometres per hour on the Nairobi to Mombasa highway, the engine doesn't feel like it's working hard. That unhurried quality is difficult to replicate.

The VX specification adds leather upholstery, a sunroof, the full Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance suite on later models, and a multi terrain select system. The ZX adds ventilated front seats, a panoramic roof, a Mark Levinson audio system, and the most comprehensive driver assistance package in the 200 Series range. The ZX is excellent. It also commands a premium of roughly KES 2 million to KES 4 million over a comparable VX, and most buyers find the VX entirely sufficient.

The 300 Series: Better Vehicle, Different Trade-off

The 300 Series is a better vehicle than the 200 Series in most measurable ways: lighter, more fuel efficient, better cabin technology, stronger performance. I covered this in depth in a previous Car Store blog. The short version: it's worth the premium if you're Nairobi based and predominantly on good roads. If you regularly travel to areas where the 300 Series service ecosystem hasn't developed yet, the 200 Series service depth is a genuine operational advantage.

What to Check When Buying a Used Land Cruiser in Kenya

The Land Cruiser's reputation for reliability is real but it's conditional on proper maintenance. A Land Cruiser with neglected service history is not the same vehicle as one with complete Toyota stamps.

Engine oil condition and service intervals. The 1VD diesel requires the correct grade of synthetic oil changed at the specified intervals. Dark sludgy oil on a dipstick check is a sign of deferred maintenance.

Turbocharger condition on the 200 Series diesel. Listen for whining at idle and under load. Have a specialist check boost pressure.

Differential locks. Test all three locks on a 200 Series: centre, front, and rear. Each should engage and disengage cleanly without grinding.

Air suspension if fitted on ZX models. Confirm the vehicle holds its ride height correctly and that no warning lamps are present.

Service history stamps. Toyota Kenya stamps are the gold standard. For imported examples, a full export service record is the next best option.

NTSA record and complete import documentation. Non-negotiable before any payment is made.

The Resale Argument

One reason the Land Cruiser remains the dominant premium SUV in Kenya despite its price is the resale market. A 2018 200 Series VX with full service history and clean documentation holds its value in a way that most European alternatives don't. There's always a buyer for a properly documented V8 in Kenya, and the price difference between a neglected example and a cared for one is proportionally larger than in most other segments. Buying the right example at the right price from a verified source is not just good sense at the time of purchase. It's a financial decision that pays out when you eventually sell.

Car Store stocks Land Cruiser models across the 200 and 300 Series in verified condition with complete documentation. If you know which generation you want or you're still deciding, we can help with both.
